Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.) has been linked to the hibernation cycle of animals. As the days get shorter, light levels weaken. This increases the desire to hibernate. S.A.D. is regarded as a form of depression triggered by the lack of daylight. This lack causes an increase in the production of melatonin (the hormone that makes us sleepy), and a reduction of seratonin, the lack of which causes depression. The exposure to bright light reverses the process with the benefit of being drug free.
